Anita (Haddad) Loomis (b. 1964: Wiesbaden, Germany) is a painter who lives and works from her home and studio in Kittery, Maine. Growing up in a home where idle hands were not appreciated, she has always been a maker of things. Anita realized she was an artist at an early age, and by age 15 chose to focus on stained glass as her medium. After high school, she attended Westfield State College (MA) where she was an Art major and where she met her husband Paul in drawing class. They married in 1985 and had two children by 1988. After earning her BA in studio art from Framingham State College (MA) in 1989, she established Loomis Studio, offering custom stained glass lighting and window panels. Anita's ambition to pursue larger scale work in the architectural stained glass field led her to accept a position with nationally recognized J. Piercey Studios of Orlando, FL, under principal designer James T. Piercey. In 1995, her family moved to Oviedo, FL and Anita began what would be a very fulfilling ten years in her dream position in an architectural stained glass and mosaic studio. Being tech savvy , Anita served the studio as office manager, marketer, bookkeeper and design/studio assistant, intensely involved with many multi-phase art-glass projects, mostly for new construction of public spaces. In 2004, noticing a decline in the architectural glass industry, Anita left J. Piercey Studios and returned to college, earning her MA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Arts Management and a graduate certificate in Public Administration from the University of Central Florida. She intended to pursue employment in a museum position. During her studies she returned to drawing and painting, building a new body of work.
Following graduation in 2006, Paul and Anita moved back to Massachusetts. While she did not secure museum employment, she worked for a renowned stained glass restoration studio for one year before accepting an administrative position in a state agency. Anita worked full-time in public service while pursuing her studio practice part-time but always with serious intent. She worked to build a reputation as a professional contemporary painter in oil and watercolor, exhibited regularly in New England, and internationally on occasion. Encouraged by sporadic but growing art sales and inspired by fellow Boston area artists who were art teachers, Anita pursued art teacher certification which she earned in 2019. At age 56, she left a public service position to accept a full-time position as a middle-school art teacher. However, the Covid pandemic began six months into her new job. Realizing her new skills and limited teaching experience would not be sufficient to best serve the students for the unknown duration of the pandemic, she finished the school year teaching art online. Always restless and wanting to push ahead, Anita and Paul moved again In July of 2020; this time to Kittery, Maine to live closer to their daughter.
Purchasing a seacoast home with attached semi-completed business space, Anita and Paul established Loomis Gallery in 2020. Putting her years of art and business administration experience to use, her small gallery initially offered artwork by regional contemporary artists, including her own. Now operating as a studio and private art teaching space Anita is an active member of Kittery's vibrant art community. She is committed to serving local artists and arts organizations while she teaches private art lessons and continues to build her studio practice. She paints prolifically, and enthusiastically seeks opportunities to share her work with an ever-widening audience. People who appreciate her work are encouraged to subscribe to her mailing list and share favorite images of her work. She still keeps her hands busy painting in the studio most every day while exploring aspects of communication, exhibiting actively and sharing her busy mind, optimism and wry sense of humor.
